Reynolds votes “No” on 21st Century G.I. Bill; Republican Chris Lee “AWOL”
Akron, NY: On Thursday, May 15th, Republican Congressman Tom Reynolds voted “No” on the 21st Century GI Bill. In response, Democratic candidate Jack Davis, a Marine and former Coast Guard officer reiterated his support for the bill’s improved veteran services and educational benefits. Mr. Davis also repeated his challenge to Republican candidate Christopher J. Lee, demanding Mr. Lee come clean on where he stands on the bill.
“Last Tuesday, I announced my support for the 21st Century G.I. Bill; I sent a letter to the Republican candidate, Christopher Lee, asking him to break with his party and to support our veterans. So far, Mr. Lee has been silent on the issue, as he has with many others. That’s not leadership.”
“As Tom Reynolds’ hand-picked successor, voters can safely expect Mr. Lee to vote the same way Tom Reynolds did – against our troops and against our veterans. Our vets deserve better and I am going to do something about it.”
“Mr. Lee should come clean – will he break with his party’s failed policies and join the Democrats in truly supporting America’s veterans, or will he wear a lapel pin, wrap himself in the flag, and call it a day?”
The new GI Bill extends benefits to all members of the military who have served on active duty since September 11, 2001, including Reservists and National Guard members, many of whom have served as much, if not more than our regular military. The bill gives veterans 15 years to use their educational assistance, compared to 10 years under the current law, and covers more kinds of educational assistance and training than current law.
On the three votes for the bill’s passage this past Thursday (May 15th), Congressman Reynolds voted, “present,” “No,” and “No.”
