Wal-Mart Destroys Jobs
Speech to the Amherst Town Board January 17, 2006

POWER CORRUPTS

A wise man once said "Power corrupts and absolute power absolutely corrupts".

Wal-Mart is the world's largest corporation with sales of over 259 billion dollars, and ranks among the most profitable.

Wal-Mart is 3 times the size as the next largest retailer.

Wal-Mart has three times more employees than GM, before the scheduled 30,000 layoff.

Wal-Mart has plans to add 310 new stores to the existing 3,625 stores.

Wal-Mart has built a global supply chain that is destroying American manufacturing businesses and the jobs they provide.

Wal-Mart forces U.S. manufacturers to meet Chinese prices and when they cannot, they help them move overseas. If they don't move, Wal-Mart buys from an overseas company.

Wal-Mart could receive permission to enter into banking in America next month.

Wal-Mart has 5 lobbyists on their payroll, and a bench of hired guns and gave 2.5 million dollars in political contributions in '04. What did they get? They got CAFTA, more free trade agreements and most Favored Nation Treatment for China.

Wal-Mart is not a good employer.

Are you worried about the working conditions for your children? Wal-Mart was fined 135,000 dollars for allowing teenagers to operate hazardous equipment.

They are great abusers and misusers of illegal alien labor.

Wal-Mart is being sued on 4 continents for denying basic rights to workers.

Over half of the manufactured products Wal-Mart sells are made in communist China.

It is almost impossible to find any manufactured products made in America in a Wal-Mart store.

Wal-Mart has destroyed more American manufacturing businesses and American jobs than any other company in the world.

Americans are Wal-Mart shopping their way to their unemployment line.

Making Wal-Mart bigger, that is more powerful, is not in the best interest of the town of Amherst, county of Erie, or America.
